STUDENTS WILL LEARN 

In this three-day pastel workshop, Tobi will share her unique process for building a dynamic color story utilizing the four elements of contrast. Students will learn to identify, select, and build a powerful color story that incorporates the appropriate value, temperature, saturation, and hues. There will be short exercises and layering experiments on the first day that will teach the process and prepare students to analyze and plan a color story for a painting.

Tobi developed this unique process and uses it for every studio painting. She has found that taking the time to develop a color story before painting, the process provides an ongoing education that continues to inform your color decisions. Over time, selecting colors becomes easier and more intuitive, and frustrating color mistakes occur less often, allowing for a more harmonious and relaxed painting experience.

First Day: Explore the Elements of Contrast 

• Learn how to identify and choose appropriate color values
• Identifying temperature-  cool and warm colors
• Learn a method for building a color story
• Select colors for the first color story using the provided reference photo 
• Review the benefits of building a color story

Second Day: Begin painting process

• Consider how to use the color story to strengthen composition. 
• Review completed color story, make necessary corrections
• Gather and organize pastels 
• Prepare paper and sketch
• Teacher Demo 

Third Day: Paint

• Full day to complete sunset painting with personal mentoring throughout the process.

WORKSHOP SUPPLIES

Tobi has curated a limited color palette for the SVC workshop which includes 27 pastels  and three sheets of 11x14 Pastelmat paper.

Over the years, Tobi has observed that beginning students may not have acquired a collection of quality pastels, with a range of values and hues, softness and hardness, needed to complete a successful painting.

It is critical to have the appropriate pastels for the workshop. Many of the exercises use specific colors to teach value and temperature, or teach color relationships Her carefully selected palette will supply everything needed for the various exercises and the specific hues needed to teach her unique color system and complete one painting. 

Tobi has secured a discounted price for the pastels and paper in the kit, ensuring that the necessary materials are as affordable as possible.

A supply list will be sent to teach student which will include a detailed color chart of the pastels used. Having the correct supplies will provide a relaxed learning experience. 

Workshop Kit includes three sheets of 11x14 PastelMat paper and 27 Pastels, Mount Visions, Schminke and Great American.

Kit materials are purchased three weeks prior to the workshop and distributed first day of workshop.

THE INSTRUCTOR

Tobi Clement is an internationally recognized and professional award-winning pastel artist, known for her expressive skies. Tobi's work was featured on the cover of the annual French publication, Pratiques De Arts #50 magazine in 2019, and was invited as one of fourteen American artists to participate in a special all-woman Pastel exhibition in Montluçon, France in 2022, honoring American Women Pastellists.
She is a Distinguished member of the Pastel Society of New Mexico (PSNM), and a Signature member of Plein Air Painters of New Mexico (PAPNM). Tobi was featured in the 2020 June/July & August/September Pastel Journal with a two-part educational editorial. PleinAir Magazine showcased Tobi in an educational editorial in the November 2020. Fine Art Connoisseur and Plein Air Magazines have selected her work for their special portfolio issues over the years. Tobi participated as faculty in 2026 Plein Air Convention and in 2026 IAPS.
