FOUR-DAY PASTEL CLOUDCROFT ART WORKSHOPS

STUDENTS WILL LEARN 

In this intensive four-day pastel workshop, Tobi will share her unique process for creating a successful color story utilizing the four elements of contrast. 

Students will gain a deeper understanding of color relationships and learn a method for choose dynamic color values that will create a harmonious yet dynamic  painting. Tobi believes that one learns best by first observing then working independently on short quick exercises. Students will spend time exploring techniques to layer and mix pastels using brushes while experimenting with the focus on developing color relationships. There will be two paintings to work through, incorporating the color story and techniques learned in the hands-on exercises. 

Tobi has found that by taking the time to create a color story prior to painting, frustrating errors and color corrections midway through painting occur less often. Over time, using this process teaches you to choose strong color relationships and make more informed color decisions. 

Tobi developed this unique process and uses it for every studio painting. She has found that taking the time to develop a color story before painting, the process provides an ongoing education that continues to inform your color decisions. Over time, creating a color story becomes easier and more intuitive, and frustrating color mistakes occur less often, allowing for a more harmonious and relaxed painting experience.

First Day: Explore the Elements of Contrast  

• Learn how to identify and choose appropriate color values
• Identifying temperature & saturation
• Learn process for building a color story
• Select colors for the first color story using the provided reference photo 

Review the benefits of building a color story work on specific exercises to incorporate new information and prepare to paint. 

 Second Day: Begin painting process 

• Consider how to use the color story to strengthen composition. 
• Review completed color story, make necessary corrections
• Prepare paper and sketch

• Third & Fourth days teacher Demo's and mentoring for two paintings. 

WORKSHOP SUPPLIES 

 It is critical to have the appropriate pastels for the workshop. Many of the exercises use specific colors to teach value and temperature, or teach color relationships. A carefully curated palette of pastels and four sheets of 11x14 PastelMat paper will be available as a kit.

Over the years, Tobi has observed that beginning students have not yet acquired a collection of quality pastels, with a range of values, hues and saturations  to complete a successful painting. 

Her carefully curated color palette will supply all the pastels needed for the exercises and the specific color values, hues and saturation needed to teach her unique color story system and complete two paintings. She has given careful consideration to the pastel brand quality and value when making her decisions and has arranged with the manufacturers to purchase at a teachers discount for the pastels and paper to ensure the most affordable price possible.
